Sapphire Therapeutics (Sapphire) is a privately held biopharmaceutical company committed to developing and commercializing promising compounds that are ready for clinical or preclinical testing in oncologic and metabolic diseases. Sapphire’s drug development team has experience in bringing over 70 drugs to market and includes senior management from companies such as Merck, Aventis, Novartis and Akros. Our team’s experience ranges through all aspects of drug development such as research, safety assessment, process research, clinical research, regulatory affairs, sales, and marketing. The Company utilizes its breadth of experience in drug development and wealth of contacts in the pharmaceutical industry to select early stage compounds that are attractive for commercialization.

The Company's first portfolio of novel compounds consists of a collection of inlicensed, orally active, small molecular ghrelin agonists. The lead compound, RC-1291, has entered Phase II human clinical studies for cancer cachexia, or wasting. This condition affects an estimated 80% of patients diagnosed with neoplastic disease. Current treatments for this condition are utilized in only a relatively small percentage of patients and are very limited in their therapeutic effect. On the other hand, studies with ghrelin and agonists of its associated G-protein coupled receptor have been shown to stimulate appetite and reverse nitrogen loss. Proprietary, third party research estimates that there are currently greater than 1.2 million patients per year receiving existing agents. This translates into a US market potential of greater than $600 million.

Sapphire Therapeutics’ second investigational drug, RC-8800, is in Phase I human clinical studies. RC-8800 is a novel, highly selective and potent inhibitor of 24-hydroxylase (the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of calcitriol) that has several potential applications in oncologic and metabolic diseases and is being developed initially as a treatment for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the US. The American Cancer Society estimates that there have been at least 232,000 cases of prostate cancer reported in 2005 and more than 30,000 deaths during the same period. The global market for prostate cancer treatments today is greater than $1 billion.

Sapphire remains committed to evaluating novel therapeutic agents for inlicensing and development. Along with existing programs, it continues to seek commercial partners for global or geographic alliances.
